Scout Expedition – North Downs

A weekend of navigating across the North Downs.

Working towards the Expedition Challenge badge has meant weeks of planning and practice for Cornwell Scouts; who have been busy working out a route, using trangias (cooking stoves), improving navigation skills and organising food.   Starting at Gomshall Station the hike set off over the North Downs, including a climb to the top of Leith Hill. Such a gloriously sunny weekend led to spectacular views across Surrey.

Camping at Bentley Copse Scout Campsite for the night the Scouts tucked into ration packs and many tins of various things with baked beans! Following a second day of hiking we returned to Lightwater for a well earned rest.

Our map reading skills and use of a compass improved considerably over the weekend, and although we got lost a few times, we now know how to get ourselves back on track with almost no trouble whatsoever…..well, almost!
