Myth busting

  • I can’t commit to every week – Don’t worry, we know life’s busy. Our leaders and helpers do not have to attend every week. We regularly have teams of adults rotate roles within term time. Or perhaps look at the many roles which aren’t running weekly?
  • I only want to be where my child is – That’s fine. Our sections are Squirrels (4-6years), Beavers (6-8years), Cubs (8-10.5), Scouts (10.5-14), after which there are Explorer and Network units. Even if vacancies aren’t advertised here we still look for additional help across all sections.
  • If I help regularly does my child get a place for free? – If you are a regular leader with us then your child has a priority place, but all scouts pay the same for everything we do.
  • I haven’t got a clue about scouting! – Nor did any of us when we started. It’s a friendly group that will help you learn the ropes. Training is provided for free. There are a couple of short online modules to get a brief background and help you get going.
  • Are there paid roles? – No, sorry, all roles are voluntary, but are very rewarding in many different ways other than monetary.
  • I don’t fancy the uniform – No worries, some helpers don’t take this opportunity and we welcome your help either way.
  • I’m safe and don’t want to complete a check – All helpers require a disclosure and barring service (DBS) check. It’s quick, online and easy to complete. We cover the cost of this check and you will need one for scouting even if you have one for other roles you may undertake.
